Basic Information - No Start

Description: This document aims to clarify that our diagnostic tools are designed to read codes from a vehicle's ECM/PCM. On Ford and Mazda vehicles, some read modes require the vehicle must at least be in a condition where it can start for proper code retrieval.

How Innova tools work:

How Innova tools work

Our diagnostic tools work by connecting to your vehicle's Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). These modules control various aspects of your vehicle's operation and are essential for diagnosing issues.

The Importance of "Starting Condition"

- Starting Condition Defined:

By "starting condition," we mean that the vehicle doesn't necessarily have to be running, but it must be capable of starting.

- Why It Matters:

In KOER (Key On, Engine Run) mode on Ford and Mazda vehicles, the ECM/PCM needs to be operational to communicate with our diagnostic tools. If your vehicle is not in a starting condition, it's likely that the ECM/PCM won't be able to send the necessary signals for code retrieval.

Limitations in a 'No Start' Scenario in “KOER” read mode.

  • 1. No ECM/PCM Communication: If the vehicle can't start, the ECM/PCM may not be powered up, which means it can't communicate with our tool.
  • 2. Code Retrieval: Without ECM/PCM communication, code retrieval is not possible, limiting the diagnostic capability.
  • 3. False Negatives: The absence of codes doesn't necessarily mean there are no issues if the vehicle is not in a starting condition.

Recommended Next Steps

If your vehicle is not starting, please change to other modes to diagnose. Only KOER mode requires the engine to run, otherwise, it just needs to turn the key ON. After that, it is advisable to resolve that issue, possibly with the help of a certified technician. This ensures that you can fully use our tools' diagnostic capabilities.
