Innova 7111: How to check Freeze Frame data

Introduction

Description: The Innova 7111 Smart Diagnostic System (SDS) tablet scan tool lets you access vehicle data recorded by the On-board Diagnostic (OBD) computer at the moment a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is detected by the engine management system. This information is called Freeze Frame (FF) Data.

Benefits: The FF Data feature displays a list of Parameter Identifiers (PIDs) such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, and throttle position, among others, which can help identify the root cause of a vehicle system problem or DTC. Technicians can use this information to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.

Instructions

Note: This procedure is carried out on the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.

Step 1: Connect the Innova 7111 to the vehicle via the 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC). Wait a moment for the AUTO-LINK process to be completed.

After retrieving, the Innova 7111 gets general information such as VIN, vehicle information, and odometer. Next, select the OBD2 Diagnostics section.

Step 2: The OBD2 diagnostics data was retrieved from the vehicle and shown in detail. Press the Freeze Frame button to view the FF data.

Note: DTC triggers the MIL, and its FF is crucial for the repair process.

Step 3: The FF data retrieved when accessing the OBD2 Diagnostic feature is shown in a pop-up.

Freeze Frame data eliminates guesswork and provides a clear and accurate picture of the vehicle's condition, reducing the risk of misdiagnosis and unnecessary repairs. Each FF Parameter in a generic OBD2 system has its significance in quickly identifying the source of faults. Examples:

  • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gives a reading of the temperature of the engine’s coolant.

  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) gives the pressure inside the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine.

  • Calculated Load (Calc Load) is a percentage value based on airflow and engine speed.

  • ...

Freeze Frame data enables cost-effective repairs by providing accurate and efficient diagnoses, thus avoiding excessive parts replacements or labor expenses.
